India Deploys Six Warships To Block Sea Tigers

THE INDIAN NAVY and Coast Guard have deployed six warships in the Gulf
of Mannar, Palk Strait and Palk Bay to prevent infiltration from, and
smuggling into, Sri Lanka from Tamil Nadu.
Naval officials told reporters in Ramanathapuram port town in Tamil Nadu
state today that the Indian Navy’s Khukri class (K class) ship, which
can launch surface-to-surface missile attacks, has been positioned in
the Gulf of Mannar. Another ship is now moving towards Palk Bay/Palk Strait.
The International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) between India and Sri
Lanka is being patrolled by INS Bharatang and a Coast Guard Ship in the
Gulf of Mannar. Two inshore patrolling vessels have also been pressed
into service, they said.
The sources explained that the main aim behind deploying these ships is
to strengthen the security cover along the coastal area.
In the recent past, a couple of incidents had occurred in this sensitive
area that have alerted the Indian security establishment to further
tighten safety measures in the sea that separates this country from Sri
Lanka.
Five fishermen from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu were killed by by Sea
Tigers. A trawler, owned by Indian fishermen but forcibly seized by the
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on May 12 along the India-Sri
Lanka maritime boundary for smuggling arms, was sunk by the Maldivian
Naval authorities in the Maldivian territorial waters on May 18. OVER.
