Does anyone have literature on line of the AO Spencer polarizing
microscopes of the 50s-60s?

I attempting to reconstruct an AO Spencer frame of the Series 2/4 that
is/was a polarizing scope with a 160mm tube length. I believe there was
also a Smith-Baker version offered that likely used common components.

I am interested in learning what variations there were of this, what
options were available for the scopes and operating instructions.

Thanks in advance for any information you can offer.

Here is a good link for AO Spencer scopes:
http://www.xmission.com/~psneeley/Personal/Microscope.htm

Also, Gordon Cougar has some related info, but his site is undergoing
some construction right now:
http://www.science-info.net/docs/AO-Spenser/

Additionally, there is the AO Blue Book Catalog (around 26 Meg), but
it's from the 1930s or thereabouts. It does show all of their
polarizing and petrographic scopes & options of the time, however.
Those scopes closely resemble my B&L petrographic scope of (possibly)
the early 50s. I have an electronic copy, but don't remember whence it
came.

While on the subject, here are a couple of sites that may be of
interest to you in working with thin-sections:
http://edafologia.ugr.es/optmine/indexw.htm (from Spain, but in
english)
http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/john/teaching/ (good general references &
links)

When it comes to literature on older microscopes, the pickins are very
slim indeed.

Thanks for the excellent reply.

I am aware of both sites....which are excellent and valuable resources.

Some of the details I am trying to determine are...

- Did AO/Spencer have specific eyepiece and objectives for polarizing
light work?

- What options were available for the intermediate layers between the
objective mount and the microscope head? I have seen at least three
different variations.

- In regards to the Smith Baker option that they offered, are the
objectives "special" or are they simply polarized light objectives?

- Again with regards to the Smith-Baker option, why a separate
condensor for each power of objective?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks
