I have had my budgie a month now and he is really tame and sociable.
Loves to be out of his cage and on our shoulder but he has started the
bad thing of biting. Not agressive like but it hurts anyway. I know
how to discipline a dog but I don't know what to do with a bird. Any
suggestions?

He's getting used to you now, and if these are little nips that hurt,
sometimes that comes with having a bird. It's called beaking. It's
how they touch and check you out. Other things can cause this like
static electricity. You may not feel it, but to a little bird he may
get a little zap.
I've been trying to use Cesar Milan's way of calm/assertive leader.
Watch The Dog Whisperer on Monday night and see if you can apply his
principles to a bird. |

Do you mean that may be the reason he bites? He sits on my shoulder
when I'm sitting.
I just checked the TV Guide and no Dog Whisperer to be had. That's
too bad because I think that would be great to watch and learn from.

Dog Whisperer is on tomorrow night on the National Geographic Channel.
I am saying it is one of the potential causes. Does he bite your
neck? It may mean he wants off, or he has to poop, or any number of
things. After one month it's difficult to tell if your bird will be
very sociable. Sometimes males of the species are not as cuddly as the
females, vice versa.
Do you have a little out of the cage gym? Try that. He can be out
and when the nipping starts simply put him over there, step him down,
and say, go poop. If he does, then you do this over and over and in a
few days he'll know to associate the command with the action. |
