A brief post for a brief lesson, only 0.7 on the Hobbs today.

The goal was ground reference and landing practice, and what a perfect day
for it -- a nice stiff breeze of 16G20@150, nominally 10 degrees off the
runway but in reality skewing around by 20-30 degrees every few minutes. So
we just stayed in the pattern to do T&Gs, and I got a pretty good education
on wind. I was surprised at how much crab it took to maintain my crosswind
and base tracks. I don't think I've ever worked as hard as I did for those
four approaches, and every takeoff was a workout just to keep the wings
level and the airplane somewhere near the runway. Truly one of the best
lessons yet.

The airport was pretty busy, too. Spent more time than I would have liked
sitting on the ground -- first we couldn't get anyone to give us a radio
check (I think unicom was on a potty break), then we waited for a
slowpoke[1] to clear the taxiway, and then waited some more for landing
traffic. Then there's three or four of us in the pattern, all trying not to
hit each other, plus two or three helos doing SEOs on their parallel
taxiway. If that doesn't convince you to keep your eyes peeled and listen
to the radio, nothing will.

This weekend is a state holiday, long weekend. I'm going camping, and my
CFI is flying a charter to someplace with a boring hotel room. Pity for
him, but I've had so much flying in the past two weeks that I'm more than
ready for a rest. Good timing. That stiff southerly breeze is surely
bringing in something unpleasant.

[1] I am aware of the irony here.
