I count this as a 6-loser hand, which is too much for 4 Spades, but it
is enouugh for a double followed by a spade call, so that's my choice.

Over 1 Spade, I bid 2 Spades, highly constructive,
Over double I bid 4 Spades
Over 4 Spades, I bid 5 Spades, which asks about partner's hearts.

What do you bid after each of the aforementioned overcalls and an
intervening pass?
1) 2H to start with (ending in 4S opposite that hand)
2) Pass
3) not an easy call. Probably a cue bid, but depends on partner's
doubling style; alternative is a gentle 2S

Definitely double. Too good for 1S and no need to preempt. I can bid
4S no matter what they do.

X - 4S
1S - 2C for Drury fit, a very handy convention

1S: The best option. I have a six-loser hand with doubletons. I have
no idea, nor do I care, how many HCP's or spades I have. I would
advance this by bidding 3H, 4-piece invitational cue.
4S: Terrible option. I have spades. I do not fear defending a
five-level contract, whatever it is. I would not advance 4S.
Double: Equally terrible option. I have a six-loser hand with
doubletons. I have no idea, nor do I care, how many HCP's or spades I
have. I would advance the double by cuebidding 2H. This boxes doubler
into a 3S call, perhaps. Not sure how to recover. |

1S. 4S with 7222 is a very bad idea. Especially
if you hold a good hand, but lots of strength
in the short suits.

1S is clear. They won't often get the auction wrong after 4S - they'll often
double and when they do they'll always be right. And you could easily go for
500 (or 800) against nothing. Double accomplishes nothing except keeping
your spades a secret from your partner.
While 4S will have occasional days in the sun (they make 4H and forget to
double, perhaps) it will be a heavy long-term loser as you concede pointless
minuses, sometimes large ones, with a flat hand and the boss suit.
With CHO's hand, 2H is clear as a response to 1S. 2H looks like a normal
response to a double. And pass of 4S would be obvious. All roads should lead
to 4S.

This is a 1S overcall. No need to rate the bad bids. Advancer should
make a limit raise, which for me is 2H. Then Overcaller bids 4S.

This is a clear 1S bid an nowhere near doubling and bidding spades (unless
your standard for overcall range is far lower than normal).
As for advancer, he would cuebid 2H after a 1S overcall and you'd get to 4S.
He would pass a 4S bid by you. And he would cuebid 2H if you made a takeout
double. (No need to jump to 2S with this hand.)

1S is the only bid I would consider. I need a better hand to double first,
and I do not pre-empt with good hands unless in 3rd seat opposite a passed
partner.

2H over 1S, showing a good raise to 2+ spades. Overcaller should respond 4S
and end the auction (I would carry on as advancer over a 4C or 4H splinter
but not after a balanced raised to game that 4S shows).
If partner doubles I bid 2H with this, then spades at the lowest level
available.
Over 4S I pass. |
