IMP pairs, board 4, all vul
As dealer, you hold:
S- KT4 H- AKT73 D- 873 C- Q9

The bidding starts:
1H - pass - 2D - 2S

You are playing 2/1 with in a casual online partnership with someone
who claims to be an expert. Your agreements include support
doubles.

1. Would you double in this situation to show 3 card support?
2. What level of confidence do you have that your partner would agree
that double shows 3 card support?

1. No, double would either be penalty or 'good hand, no good bid'
with the latter probably more fashionable right now.

2. None at all.

1. I do not play support doubles in the minors. Support Dbl is on through 2
of our major. In my experience, this is the mainstream way of playing
support doubles.
2. I think VERY few would even consider the possibility of Dbl being a
support double here. In other words, I expect an expert to NOT agree that
it is a support double.

Do you really need to take a poll to prove your partner is an idiot?
You already know the answer.

1: No.I might double but not as a support double. The three Diamonds
are the only indicator in htis hand that the double might be wrong.
This is a penalty double. This almost must be a penalty double. I
would like to misfit Diamonds a little more for the Double but the
hand is so good for it otherwise. AKXXX in a suit where partner has
not shown support is very valuable on defense. If partner does have
Heart support, he can pull the double.

2: My partner better not agree that this is a support double. Why
don't we just wear a "kick me" sign if they can come into our game-
going auction like this.

No, support doubles do not apply in this situation.

If my partner thought that support doubles apply in this situation then
I would have no confidence that we would understand each other in any
other situation.

Yes, I already knew the answer for this one. Just needed some
reinforcement.

Besides, I have posted more than once to this group on a topic where I
thought I knew the answer, only to find out that "everything I think I
know is wrong".

On this hand, I was actually the partner of the opening bidder, who
did indeed make a support double. I passed with shortness in hearts.
Suboptimal defense allowed the contract to make with 2 overtricks
instead of only 1.

I will direct opening bidder's attention to this thread.

Support doubles are best played only when partner has responded in a
major. For more information on Support Doubles (and Redoubles) see
