On this day ten years ago there was posted here the infamous threatening
statement of the Royal Eoghanact Galloglas Guard, Commander Colonel
Baron James Shortt of Castleshort, bodyguard to Terence MacCarthy 'Mór':

Incredibly, Shortt is still in operation, but the relentless pursuit of
the members of the Army Rumour Service must be having an effect:

Even more incredibly, the man is apparently free to give training
courses involving weapons in Castlebellingham, Co Louth.
I am endeavouring to let others make most of the running in these
matters as I work on various projects, but I take the opportunity to
refer again to the also incredible continuation of the unreformed Office
of the Chief Herald of Ireland, which lacks proper legal status and is
headed by a man who put his signature to Terence MacCarthy's certificate
of chiefship. Ireland of course is in deep recession, and as noted here
already one government proposal to save money has been the amalgamation
of the National Library, wherein resides the OCHI, with the National
Archives. The MacCarthy Report (no relation, 'An Bord Snip Nua') has
just been published and recommends a series of swingeing cuts directed
mostly at health, social welfare and education. The OCHI is too much
small beer to be specifically mentioned for axing, but I certainly would
not think it just if such a compromised and flawed entity should survive
when other more deserving cultural bodies go to the wall.
