From ComingSoon.net ...
First Trailer for Universal's Despicable Me
-----------------------------------------------------------
We're still a year out, but a 2 minute and 31 second trailer
for Universal Pictures' animated Despicable Me has already
been released featuring a full scene from the film. The film
opens July 9, 2010 and is voiced by Steve Carell, Jason
Segel, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Russell Brand, Jemaine
Clement, Jack McBrayer and Julie Andrews. This is how
the studios describes the pic:
In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded
by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes,
sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst
to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a
vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army
of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell),
planning the biggest heist in the history of the world.
He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in
Universal's new 3-D CGI feature, "Despicable Me."
Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his
arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready
vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who
stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the
immense will of three little orphaned girls who look
at him and see something that no one else has
ever seen: a potential Dad.
The world's greatest villain has just met his
greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo,
Edith and Agnes.

Not a good sign.
Derek Janssen (think they were aiming for that Ice Age squirrel
"Self-contained short" vibe, but it didn't come off somehow)

It puzzled me too.
When we discovered--after about three minutes of shtick--that the plot
was about an Evil Villain, my first thought was, "Oh, this's that Ben
Stiller Dreamworks faux-Incredibles thing!"
(Er, oops, no--Boy, has this movie got its work cut out for it.) :/

I'd ask what the rest of you would consider a better use for the animated
medium but, if it hasn't been abandoned by an 'independent director'
(read: animation fan), it's likely hidden in some obscure corner of the
internet. (ie YouTube or Newgrounds)
Still, perhaps (NSFW) examples like

$OOpah Nin10Doh!
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/476976
and a certain
Sexy Alien Cartoon Band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc-7YlBYWc4
will tide us over until its eventual arrival.
In fact, here, have a 'Drink' on me. ^_^

Oh, I dunno, I'm thinking like, an old guy with balloons on his house
discovers he has a rat who can cook, and then they take a road trip out
on Route 66 and find a lonely robot out in the middle of the desert? ;)
Derek Janssen (and then, like, a family of superheroes could fight
whoever that Montgomery Burns guy was at the end of the trailer?)
